A LITTLE CONTEXT

Your next stop has a story.

Travel Texas History is an independent guide to the state’s historic places. Browse the map, find places nearby, or explore the history along a driving route.

Records, routes & sources

The map uses a downloaded snapshot of the Texas Historical Commission’s public GIS layers. Categories may overlap: one place can have several designations. Records with restricted addresses are omitted. Above-ground State Antiquities Landmarks are included; archaeological locations are not sourced from restricted layers.

Historic trail lines are documented alignments, not turn-by-turn driving directions. Some sections cross private land or no longer follow a road. Old Spanish Trail Highway is a historic automobile route. Chisholm Trail currently displays associated markers; a verified trail line is not available in this dataset.

UNESCO’s San Antonio Missions appear as six representative locations, including Rancho de las Cabras. Landmark polygon pins and UNESCO pins are approximate, not verified entrances. Town reference points come from the 2025 U.S. Census Gazetteer and USGS Geographic Names Information System, including smaller unincorporated communities.

Plan a thoughtful visit

A designation does not guarantee public access. Check official visitor information, opening hours and road conditions. Respect private property. Route results measure proximity to the road; actual driving detours may be longer.

Map & privacy

Map tiles © OpenStreetMap contributors. Driving routes use the OSRM public demonstration service, suitable for light, noncommercial use and subject to availability. Submitted route endpoints are sent to that service. Device location is requested only when you choose “Use my location” and is used in your browser for nearby searches. Map views request tiles from OpenStreetMap. Marker descriptions are hosted from the THC Atlas public bulk export; missing records may be retrieved through this site. Wikipedia links are explicitly labeled as article links or searches; not every marker has its own article.
